The Start-up and Opening Celebration

The hub of BioBlitz activity was the U.S. Department of Energy's Rocky Flats Visitor Center.

Scores of volunteers donned orange BioBlitz t-shirts and ate sandwiches prior to the start.

At 12 noon, 200 volunteers and participants gathered for the Opening Ceremony.

John Tayer, from Roche Colorado, served as the Master of Ceremonies and introduced the state's elected officials who have championed preservation of this area.

There was standing-room-only at the Opening Ceremony.

Attorney General Ken Salazar called the BioBlitz area one of Colorado's crown jewels and noted that its value would increase as development continues.

Senator Allard's staff read his letter of support for the event.

Doug Young represented Congressman Udall's long-term efforts to preserve the area for future generations.

Theresa Glowacki, Boulder County Parks and Open Space Dept., welcomed everyone to BioBlitz.

Karen Hollweg, facilitator for the organizing committees, was recognized by Theresa Glowacki on behalf of the Steering Committee.

Ken Foelske, Jefferson County Open Space, thanked all the volunteers and called for BioBlitz to begin!
